Busting 3 Common LinkedIn Myths

Why the heck aren’t you on LinkedIn yet!? Today we are busting 3 common LinkedIn myths!

If you aren’t on LinkedIn yet… why not? We hear plenty of excuses from online business owners who haven’t jumped on the LinkedIn train yet, but if you ask up – they aren’t particularly good excuses. Today we’re here to bust a few common LinkedIn myths that we hear all the time as LinkedIn experts.

Busting 3 Common LinkedIn Myths

Myth #1: My Ideal Clients Aren’t on LinkedIn

As a professional networking platform, LinkedIn tends to get a bad reputation for being too buttoned-up and corporate. This leaves online business owners with the impressino that their client’s couldn’t possibly be on LinkedIn, because their clients are cool (!) and fun (!) and so not the corporate type.

But this couldn’t be more untrue.

LinkedIn is a professional networking platform, but there is no one definition of “professional”. Just like many creative online business owners gravitate to Instagram to share about their work, many other working professionals (business owners too!) gravitate towards LinkedIn for the very same reason. Your people are there, you just need to know how to look for them.

Truth: There are 740 million people on LinkedIn. We’re betting at least a handful are ideal clients just waiting to work with someone like you.

This myth? So busted.

Myth #2: LinkedIn is Sleazy and Filled with Spammy Sales People

We get it. A lot of people on LinkedIn (and a lot of LinkedIn lead generation companies) follow the same formula: send hundreds of connection requests, message those connections as soon as the request is accepted, re-send the message over and over and over until you get a response, book a call, etc. Or, more than likely – have the person tell you to take a hike.

These methods are generic, relentless, and only regard people as numbers. Statistically speaking, if you reach out to enough people eventually one of them will probably say yes – right?

But this method leaves the recipient feeling spammed and leaves you feeling gross.

Just because this is the most popular method of LinkedIn lead generation, doesn’t mean it has to be yours.

Truth: It’s all in your method and approach.

By establishing strong messaging that shows you actually want to get to know your network and taking the time to engage with your community before launching into a sales pitch, you’ll feel like you’re being true to yourself and your values. Once you feel this way, your network will feel it too!

Another myth – busted.

Myth #3: LinkedIn Takes Too Much Time

You’re super busy. Between engaging in Facebook groups, creating content for Instagram, managing an email list, and doing client work, it seems impossible to imagine putting something else on your plate.

Yes, figuring out new social media platforms can be daunting.

Truth: It doesn’t have to if you have the right strategy.

And when we say LinkedIn strategy, we don’t mean posting every day, flooding your feed with lengthly thought leadership articles, and spending hours scrolling through your feed.

We’re talking about a few minutes a day of specific, targeted interactions, repurposing some of your old content, and creating a hub for people to find you online. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. What you need is a minimum viable output strategy for LinkedIn. The goal is for you to go from “I don’t have time for another platform” to “I need to raise my prices because I don’t have time for another client,” with as little effort as possible.

We’re gonna go ahead and bust this myth too.

These myths? Busted, busted, and busted.
